Age Spots

What Are Age Spots?

Age spots, also known as liver spots or solar lentigines, are flat, darkened patches of skin that commonly appear on sun-exposed areas such as the face, hands, arms, shoulders, and feet. At Inner Beauty & Skin in Clovis, CA, we treat patients who notice these spots as they age, particularly those over 40. Age spots range from freckle-sized to larger than half an inch and may vary in color from light brown to black, often appearing in clusters.

Causes, Diagnosis & Prevention

Age spots are primarily caused by cumulative exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light but may also result from tanning bed use, skin trauma, or genetic predisposition. People with fair skin or a history of frequent sunburns are at greater risk.

While most age spots are harmless, spots that change color, grow rapidly, itch, or bleed should be evaluated by a medical professional to rule out malignancy.
